This week students learned...
- how to used an inforgraphic to gather information about deforestation and endangered species.
- note-taking skills: using non-fiction features to locate specific information needed for research, stop and jot, creating a bulleted list
- how to used depth and complexity icons to think deeper about the Weka bird.
- that research requires them to be scholars...brings materials to class, ponders big ideas, thirsts for knowledge, and is not afraid to exercise their intellect.
We will begin independent research after the Thanksgiving Break. Students will be required to independently research an endangered species. I will upload a Symbaloo Webmix on the Student Blog to help them find an endangered species. This is not homework! Students are not required to choose an animal before they come back from the break!!! But, if at some point next week, your child is bored, then I encourage you and your child to use it to start looking for an endangered species to investigate.
Please remember your child will do most of their research in class, so it's important to remember these things:
Please remember your child will do most of their research in class, so it's important to remember these things:
- Your child must demonstrate a thirst for knowledge for their chosen endangered species.
- It is crucial that students demonstrate scholarly behaviors. This research project will take several weeks. They will need to be responsible about bringing in their materials. Students who forget their materials will go back to class. This is not a punishment, but simply, students aren't productive without their research notes. I can't have students randomly searching for information without their notes.
- Be your child's biggest cheerleader during this process. Ask them how their research is coming along. Show your support by taking them to the public library. When students know that mom and/or dad are on top of what is going on in class they are more likely to be successful...ultimately, they want to make you proud!
I hope everyone has a safe, pleasant, restful and blessed week!
