This week in ALPHA...
- This week we learned about Pangaea, or Supercontinent. We learned about a scholar, Alfred Wegener, who came up with the Continental Drift Theory.
- Our Essential Questions were: 1. What is Pangaea? 2. How did Alfred Wegner demonstrate Scholarly Behaviors?
- Vocabulary we used: Pangaea (greek word: pan - all and gaea - earth or lands), continent, theory, continental drift and Supercontinent.
- Our essential questions lead to other questions.... 1. What lead Alfred to believe that the continents were once 1 large Supercontinent? 2. What difficulties did he face? 3. Do you think Earth is still changing? 4. What do you predict will happen in the future if the continents are still drifting apart? 5. What qualities do ALPHA students and Alfred share?
- Students received information about our beginning of the year project. This should be a fun and creative project and a little parental assistance is encouraged. Students are required to transform their plain paper bag into an animal that best represents their personality and interests. These projects are intended to spark creativity and requires students to think deeper by having to think about their personality and make comparisons to an animal. Parents, please encourage some out-of-the-box thinking when your child is creating their animal. Have them look at their bag in different perspectives (depth & complexity)....it doesn't have to look like a puppet. Projects are due the week of September 22-26. Make sure students come to class ready to present their bag. Some practice presenting and speaking is highly encouraged the day before they come to ALPHA class. I have seen these kiddos create some amazing things, so I'm really excited to see the end product! The sky's the limit...have fun!
